Paul Allen Idea Man awesome book!

Paul Allen Idea Man… awesome book! Im reading a book that has really inspired me: Paul Allen, Idea Man.  Its Paul Allens memoir. Around the time I was born, and for the next few years until I turned 11 and moved out of the country, there were amazing things happening with the computer industry.  Really amazing. Pauls book walks you through his early years, including the high school where he met Bill Gates when he was in 8th grade.  It walks you through his passions, like chemistry and geeky stuff. Paul invites you to peak in on the early days of Microsoft, which was a little company poised to take over the world, but back in those days there were just a little software company making some excellent strategic decisions. As I read through the stories Im inspired.  Many people think all the great companies, and all the wealth, has already been created. so they need to work for someone else, and they need to look to the government for wealth or lifestyle but Pauls story is inspiring because we can, today, start our own thing, decide our own fate, risk, and sometimes enjoy the benefits of risking. Are you looking for hope and inspiration?  Check out Pauls book. I got mine from the library. Cool factoid: there was a point when Paul and Bill applied to work for a company Bill used his HANDWRITTEN RESUME and got the job. Not typed handwritten.  I would love to see a copy of the resume that was a part of the history of one of the wealthiest men around. What are YOU reading that inspires YOU? 5 Super Simple Ways To Spend Less And Save More

5 Super Simple Ways To Spend Less And Save More You know you must spend less to save more, but the day-to-day reality of achieving your goal isn’t always as clear. If you’re having trouble translating your ambitious resolution into an accepted way of life, here are some easy tips to help you meet your goal of fixing your finances. Don’t be distracted by other people You wouldn’t be the only one wishing they could cut back on their spending, but don’t let your common goals fool you into thinking the state of your finances is similar. Some people who claim they need to save more are just like those people with speedy metabolisms and naturally slim waists who say they need to drop a few pounds. They can afford to spend (or eat) a little more than you can, so don’t assume you too can invest in a new iPhone X or Spring Break vacation just because they have. Take the time to identify the people who you think could steer you wrong, and try to insulate yourself from them. This may be difficult at first as you learn how to decline invitations to expensive dinners or holidays, but you’ll get used to it. Help yourself by being honest with your friends and family. Make sure the people you trust the most understand your goals. They might even be able to regulate their own enabling behaviours, so they can stop tempting you with things that involve money. Cut the cord and ditch cable So many channels but nothing to watch. Only those with cable understand the frustration of channel surfing for hours. Time isn’t the only thing you’re wasting with a cable subscription. You’re also wasting money. The average American spends about $100 per month on their package. If you find yourself bored by the boob tube, it’s time to cut the cord. You don’t have to become one of those people who claim they “don’t watch television” just to appease your finances. You can switch to a Netflix streaming subscription, get a ton of great content like Stranger Things 2 and Godless, and pay a fraction of the price. The basic two-stream plan is only $9.99. At roughly 10 bucks, it’s a tiny dent in your budget compared to the crater left by your cable. Make an appointment with a financial advisor When you’re facing chronic debt that dates back far beyond the holidays, you may need a professional opinion to tackle your situation. A financial advisor offers up their expert knowledge of personal finances and financial products to help you create an effective plan of attack on your debt. While many see them as professionals who just suggest investments, this is far from their only function. As an amazing resource for all things financial, they offer help on a variety of subjects. They can help clarify tough financial concepts, help explain the advantages and disadvantages of consolidating debt, and help discover the latest loan options you have when you face an emergency without any savings. With tax season on its way, they can also help you file or reveal tax credits and other rebates you’re eligible for to capitalize on your deductions. An appointment will cost money. As it varies from professional to professional, call around to your local certified financial advisors to see what kind of fee you can expect. Embrace your green side Often the way you run your household has a few opportunities for improvement. When you make your home eco-friendly, you can take advantage of the cost savings of energy efficient habits. Many people assume you need to make huge investments to turn your house green, but it’s not necessarily true. The big things do cost a lot of money up front â€" like upgrading to solar panels on your roof or an Energy Star furnace â€" but smaller green gestures promise savings without any upfront costs. Using your energy-draining appliances during off-peak hours will cost you less per kWh. Insulating your home against cracks can improve the efficiency of your furnace or air conditioner, and relying on blankets and layered clothing to regulate your temperature can help you keep your thermostat at room temperature. Check out a guide to greenifying your house to find other strategies you can adopt, and see how you can save some money while helping the environment. Automate your finances Have you ever jolted awake in the middle of the night with the sudden realization you forgot to pay your cellphone bill? Or maybe you had to wait until the utility company sent you a notice to remind you that you’ve been several weeks late on your payments. If this sounds like something you deal with regularly, it’s time you stop relying on your forgetful memory to pay bills on time. You can automate your accounts to do it all for you. Depending on the type of account you have, you can either do this yourself online or you can speak with a representative from your bank. All you have to do is pre-authorize payees to make withdrawals from your account and specify the time and amounts they’re allowed to take. Then your bank will automatically pay your bills at the right time without you ever having to worry. You can also automate investments into savings accounts and other financial products to help create a financial safety net for the future. At the end of the day, though your goal may be a challenge, it’s not a lofty one. Spending less to save more is as basic as it gets, so your attempts to achieve it shouldn’t involve elaborate strategies or witchcraft. Sometimes, plain and pragmatic methods work better than any fancy technique. Give these tips a chance to see how easy it is to make responsible spending a reality in the new year, and you’ll save money faster than you thought possible.

4 Tips for Reducing the Turnover Rate of Your Millennial Employees CareerMetis.com

4 Tips for Reducing the Turnover Rate of Your Millennial Employees â€" CareerMetis.com When you’re running a business, you have more elements to work on each month than can easily be listed. Yet, in your packed-full schedule, it’s necessary to create time to consider the engagement and productivityof your workforce and to take action to boost this.In particular, you must find ways to reduce the turnover rate of your employees. When someone leaves your organization, they take their knowledge and experience with them.evalPlus, you also have to spend time, money, and energy to find a replacement and trainthem up.Furthermore, if your turnover rate is high, general team morale is likely low, too. When it comes to keeping employees committed, loyal, and onboard, many business owners struggle to get the results they want, especially with younger staff members. However, there are things you can do today and into the future that will help to reduce the turnover rate of your Millennials and other young workers.1) Ask Employees What They WantThe first step is to ask employees w hat they want. You don’t have to guess and stress about making the right choice. Instead, have conversations with younger workers to find out what they value most. They might surprise you with what they say, as these days Millennials tend to be more focused on other factors than how much they get paid. These chats can be done when you first hire people, in annual performance reviews, or in other one-on-one conversations throughout the year.2) Help Workers Feel a Part of the BusinessSomething many Millennials mention is the importance of feeling like they have a purpose in their work, and are truly part of the business. People look for meaning and want to be more than a cog in the wheel; they want to know that what they do and say makes a difference.evalAs such, look for ways to include young workers in the direction of your venture. Ask them for their ideas on new products or services, or ways to solve problems or otherwise innovate and drive the business forward. Implement as many of their ideas as possible, too.Plus, give people accountability. That is, be wary of micromanaging your team. Hire the best people for each job and then leave them to go about their tasks as they see fit. As long as employees are achieving what you need them to in the desired timeframe, it shouldn’t matter how they get to that point.3) Thank Staff MembersIt’s also wise to thank your staff members, especially the younger ones who have grown up being acknowledged frequently.Don’t just thank employees for their successes, either. While results are nice, it’s as necessary to take note of people’s efforts. Thank workers for filling in for sick or vacationing colleagues, for staying back late regularly to help complete projects, or for being proactive and coming up with suggestions for how to streamline processes or otherwise improve the business.evalThank people in person wherever possible, too, or else opt for a meaningful handwritten letter, phone call, video chat, or email as required. You might also like to thank people in a more public way, through company intranet boards, newsletters, social media sites, or in group settings, like meetings or at conferences.4) Hand Out AwardsAwards also go down well with Millennials and other young workers (not to mention your entire team). Set up a regular awards program, such as an Employee of the Month system, or do things more freely, as you feel it’s needed. To get the best results from awards, make a big fuss of employees receiving them, and always be on hand yourself to give them out. If you’re not available, at least have another top manager there to do the honors. In addition, check out employee recognition awards ideasfor options of quality mementos you can provide to staff members. For instance, you could choose glass or brass awards, framed certificates, or even go down a more light-hearted path and set up trophies in fun shapes that relate in some way to what the business sells or some in-joke all t he team is aware of. Either way, ensure the award is seen as something special and meaningful, not cringe-worthy or boring. These are just a few of the steps you can take to build a positive workplace with engaged Millennial employees who stay working for you longer.Other ideas include:Providing perks and rewardsGiving people the chance to move around the companyOffering training, access to events, and other opportunities for employees to growProviding flexible work hours and locationsCoaching and mentoring young workers and giving regular feedbackEnabling employees to give back through volunteering or fundraising in-officetimeImplement at least some of the ideas mentioned above and you should soon have a more committed and loyal team of employees.

Being the Perfect Job Candidate has its Pitfalls

Being the Perfect Job Candidate has its Pitfalls I just finished reading a YahooHotJobs article on recruiter pet peeves about job seekers. Yves Lemusi, CEO of Checkster makes an excellent point regarding the way job seekers tackle questions about mistakes or weaknesses. He says people who are so insecure to admit their shortcomings or even their mistakes make me feel that they lack good emotional intelligence.Hiring managers arent looking for perfect candidates and many need to understand the mistakes you have made in the past so they can understand how the lesson you learned from a previous mistake made you better at what you do and how that experience will help shape the way you make decisions at your next company. In addition to the perception that people who cant discuss past mistakes may lack emotional intelligence, many hiring managers will infer that the person who cant admit to mistakes is either dishonest, very green in their job function, extremely risk adverse, or someone who has never been stretched in previous roles.I n order to build trust and rapport with a hiring manager, your interview stories need to be credible. And establishing credibility often includes discussing your past mistakes and areas for improvement. These are hard stories to convey and preparing quality answers requires introspection and practice. Focus on stories that prove how a mistake had a long-term positive result that could only be achieved because the mistake was made. You will score more points with the hiring manager for being authentic than you will for being perfect.

Big news on the day after the big game -

Big news on the day after the big game - I’m not a huge football fan, and far from an expert on the subject, but the Super Bowl is about more than just the game. It’s a party, commercials, a big story this year, two brothers as head coaches and managing the unexpected (power outage). It seemed a great time to officially announce some exciting news… But first, since I’m all about the connections…Some fodder from last night: The “coaches are brothers” story. What’s the likelihood of two brothers being head coaches of NFL teams? (And playing each other in the “Big Game?”) Yes, there’s the family legacy issue, with the father as a coach, and I’m sure there was some big-time networking involved, but it still seems pretty improbable. What is the lesson for the rest of us? There’s a big world out there, and lots of room for talented people with skills to make a mark, be distinctive and to succeed. If you’re thinking of starting a business, you may recognize that there are lots of other people out there who are making a living doing what you want to do. In spite of that, it doesn’t mean you can’t also be successful. While there is only one   winner, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be very successful if you take the right steps to demonstrate your expertise and to expand your network. Unknowns (and underdogs) can win it all. Okay, maybe the Ravens aren’t exactly “unknowns.” But, they are a relatively new team, formed in 1996. As a non-football watcher, I had to ask, “what is a Raven?” when I heard they were facing the 49ers. They went from start-up to Big Game winners. So it took 17 years for me to hear of them, but I am not their target audience, so that’s okay! Similarly â€" you don’t need everyone to know about you â€" only the ones you need to influence. And, even in a big, deep field of plays, you can still succeed, with hard work and maybe a little luck. Your thoughts influence your actions. If you watched the game, it was clear the momentum shifted after the blackout. What looked like a blowout game turned into an actual contest. It turns out thats not so surprising. The AP reported that Ravens safety Ed Reed said some of his teammates were worried that the game would turn when the lights came back on. The bad part is we started talking about it, he said. Some of the guys were saying, Theyre trying to kill our momentum. I was like, Theres two teams on the field. But once we started talking about it, it happened. We talked it up. This is such a big factor for anyone who wants to make a change or try something different. If you convince yourself that you can or cannot do it it is more likely to be true! How does all of this relate to my news? I have a new book in the works! This summer, Social Networking for Business Success: Turn Your Interests Into Income will hit bookstores near you. I’m thrilled to have collaborated with my friend and colleague, Hannah Morgan of CareerSherpa.net, to co-author this book full of ideas and resources for anyone who wants to use social networks to expand their business opportunities. Its a subject near and dear for both of us, and were excited to share our new book with you! In our book, we offer information and advice for a quick ramp-up if you’re a business owner who wants to use social networking tools to expand and grow. We also provide targeted help for those of you who may be thinking it would be a good idea to start thinking of yourself as a business and marketing your skills accordingly. The Super Bowl lessons make it clear that the improbable is possible. Your success is in your hands â€" sometimes; all it takes is just the right information to move from the theoretical to the actual. We can’t wait to share this book with you! (Read Hannahs big announcement.)
